Martin Brest wanted the Detroit office to be as different from the Beverly Hills office as possible. He didn't think a Jewish person like Paul Reiser would be working at the Beverly Hills police department. Reiser's character, Jeffrey, was named after Jeffrey Katzenberg, future President of Production at Paramount.
