Producer David De Silva, who had lobbied hard with MGM executives to hire Alan Parker to direct "Fame" after the tremendous success of "Midnight Express", began to backpedal his decision when he expressed to Parker upon seeing the early footage that he was making what De Silva interpreted as an "inspirational and uplifting" film into something "too dark and disturbing", especially with the Ralph Garcy (Barry Miller) character. Parker ignored him and maintained his own vision of Christopher Gore's screenplay, rewriting significant parts of it on his own.
