In a interview of Cary Elwes about his book documenting the filming of The Princess Bride, he said that the epic sword fight in Scaramouche (1952) was a direct inspiration for the sword fight between Dread Pirate Roberts and Inigo Montoya. The rehearsals for the fight were intense and once the actors had it down at half speed they demonstrated it at full speed to director Rob Reiner, who was displeased with the whole thing taking only a minute. He then had the pair, along with their teachers, watch a series of swashbucklers, including Scaramouche, resulting in a full three-minute sword fight with a bunch of gymnastics thrown in for good measure. They regarded the fight in Scaramouche as the best sword fight in cinema history.
