Jane Kaczmarek was pregnant during filming of season 4, which is what led to the fifth son Jamie being introduced to the show, to explain her growing baby bump. This is also why she's absent for a few episodes, because Kaczmarek had to take maternity leave, with the in-universe explanation being that she's staying with her sister Susan.
