Avery Brooks was best known for his role on Spenser (1985), in which he worked with Robert Urich. Urick had two connections to Star Trek. His wife, Heather Menzies-Urich, appeared in Tutti insieme appassionatamente (1965). Director Robert Wise also directed Star Trek (1979), and her character's father was played by Christopher Plummer, who appeared in Rotta verso l'ignoto (1991). Secondly, Urick also appeared in the mini-series Colomba solitaria (1989). One of the lead characters, Woodrow Call, also appeared in the prequel Comanche Moon (2008), and was played by Karl Urban.
