Luke and Leia were not meant to be brother and sister in the original story. After the revelation that Leia was in love with Han in L'Impero colpisce ancora (1980), George Lucas received huge amounts of fan mail complaining that Luke and Leia should be a couple. The decision to make them siblings was in part to silence the complaints.
