The Presidio was originally a fort back when California was known as New Spain, being built in 1776 on the northern tip of the central San Francisco Peninsula in San Francisco Bay. It was established as a means of gaining a foothold in northern California as Spain continued to expand its territory. It continued as a fort and prison, then was passed to Mexico, and in 1848, to the United States, serving an an Army base for one hundred forty-one years. In 1989, in line with the Base Realignment and Closure program, the base was closed and absorbed into the Golden Gate Recreational Area, and then was handed over to the National Parks Service in 1994.
