The novel has several parallel's to Shakespeare's Hamlet. Hamlet and Paul are both avenging the deaths of their fathers. Hamlet discovers that his uncle, Claudius, killed his father. Paul discovers that his father's killer, Baron Harkonnen, is also his own (maternal) grandfather. Claudius at one point exiles Hamlet to England where he is captured by pirates. Paul goes into exile and joins the Fremen. Had Paul been born female (as his mother was instructed to do), he would have been betrothed to Feyd Harkonnen, whom he later defeats in a duel. Hamlet had a relationship with Ophelia, and defeats her brother, Laertes, in a duel.
