The sheriff played by Brad Dourif is named in memory of Leigh Brackett, a screenwriter and (mostly) science fiction novelist. Her long Hollywood career included co-writing films as diverse as Il grande sonno (1946), Un dollaro di onore (1959), and L'Impero colpisce ancora (1980). Rio Bravo was the inspiration for a previous John Carpenter movie, Distretto 13: le brigate della morte (1976), which featured the original Sheriff Brackett, Charles Cyphers.
