Gale tells Sam that she will not write a book about the latest Woodsboro massacre because she'd rather let the killers, Richie and Amber, die in anonymity instead of making them famous post-mortem, which is exactly what happened with the previous killers (though it's implied Gale didn't write about Jill and Charlie's killing spree, Jill still received media attention for being the "sole survivor" of the Scream 4 (2011) massacre). This is a reference to a highly contested issue that is debated in society about whether or not mass murderers and/or serial killers should be immortalized with media coverage. It was an especially heated debate after the Columbine High School shooting, as the shooters (Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris) essentially left a legacy behind with their horrific murders and the subsequent aftermath of media coverage and political debates about gun control and violent video games and movies. Their massacre actually did affect the Scream franchise too, as Scream 3 (2000) was notoriously toned down in gore and violence as a response to the shooting, along with the decision not to include teenagers in the cast.
