Commodus tells Lucius the tale of Emperor Claudius who was betrayed by his own family, as an analogy to his own situation. Emperor Claudius was portrayed by Sir Derek Jacobi in the acclaimed series Claudius (1976). Jacobi played Senator Gracchus in this movie.
