Harrison Ford wanted Han Solo to die at the end of this movie, and he did not want to play the character again, but instead of killing off the character, George Lucas had a different idea and opted for Han to be frozen in carbonite, in case Ford had a change of heart and agreed to return for Il ritorno dello Jedi (1983), the character would be revived.
