The idea for the show comes from the experiences of the producer Bill Wright when he was a Prisoner of War during WWII. He was often asked for his "Name", "Rank" and "Number" (the only information he was obliged to give under the Geneva Convention). He decided to change this to "Name", "Occupation" and "Specialised Subject". This is why the show is so dark, and why the question-master was originally the interrogator.
