John Berendt, the author of the book, had given Kevin Spacey interview tapes of Jim Williams so that he could imitate his way of talking. Spacey said that he had heard Williams' trial testimony and had the style down. When filming, however, he was far too laid back and not much like Jim Williams at all. It was then that Berendt realized, hilariously, that Spacey had based his way of speaking on Williams' recorded testimony from the fourth trial, during which Williams had been completely stoned on valium.
