The vampire curse was placed upon Barnabas Collins twice. The first time was when he shot Angelique in the 1795 storyline. She placed the vampire curse upon him when she believed that she was dying. The second time was in the present-day Leviathan storyline, when Barnabas attempted to destroy the Leviathan box and a large bat flew out of it and attacked him. This was administered by Leviathan leader Jeb Hawkes as punishment for Barnabas being free of the Leviathans' influence over him and turning against him. This second time was a decidedly stronger vampire curse than the one that Angelique placed upon him in 1795. His lust for blood was much stronger, the injections that Dr. Hoffman administered to Barnabas earlier in the series were not only useless this time around, but actually amplified his bloodlust, and this stronger curse, presumably, bypassed Barnabas' connection with the artificial man, Adam (Robert Rodan, who portrayed Adam, had long left the series). Furthermore, Barnabas' connection to his victims were so strong that no matter what Barnabas did to stay away from and not do any further harm to them, they came to him, both willingly and unsolicited, urging him to give into his lust for blood by stating convincingly enough to Barnabas that he needed them. One episode showed a victim even going so far as to threaten to expose Barnabas if he did not do so upon her.
