According to the Dutch director Paul Verhoeven at a Q&A session in Helsinki, Finland during the 2012 Night Visions Film Festival, he was under consideration to direct this movie, based on his work on his movie Soldato d'Orange (1977). He was invited for a meeting with the producers and brought with him his newest movie, Spruzzi (1980), of which he was proud and wanted to screen for the producers. After the screening, he never heard from them again.
