The character of Two-Face/Harvey Dent first appeared in Detective Comics #66 (August 1942), created by the writer Bill Finger and the artist Bob Kane. He is typically depicted as a former district attorney who turned to crime due to personal trauma, while suffering from dissociative identity disorder. "Two-Face obsessively makes all important decisions by flipping a two-headed coin". According to Bob Kane's autobiography, Two-Face's creation was inspired by the earlier character Dr. Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde. Jekyll was a respectable doctor whose other personality was an unrepentant criminal.
