There are various accounts of the inspiration for the alien creatures; at different times, Joe Cornish has said they were inspired by the 'wolf' sequence from the film '300', the Ring Wraiths from LOTR, and the creatures from Delphine Studios 'Another World' videogame , to which they bear a striking resemblance, as any '90s gamer nerd can attest.
