Over the course of the series, Gary Coleman was signed to star in TV and Feature Films, which resulted in scheduling conflicts with Diff'rent Strokes. As a result, Arnold would be completely or largely absent from some episodes, often making bookend appearances to explain his absence. Coleman also missed later episodes when undergoing emergency kidney treatments.
