When marketing the film in 2003, studio publicists claimed the film was based upon Hillary Clinton's experiences at Wellesley College. However, Clinton attended Wellesley in the 1960s, nearly a decade after the film's setting. Upon viewing the film, Clinton stated she saw little resemblance between her own experiences at Wellesley and the plot of the film.
