The line "Let them eat cake" is taken from Marie Antoinette (02nd November 1755 - 16th October 1793) and the last queen of France, and queen of King Louis XVI of France, during the French Revolution (05th May 1789 - 1799). Marie Antoinette asked her page why people were rioting in the city [Paris], the servant informed her that there is no bread. With this reply, it is said that her answer to her people starving in the streets were to, "Then let them eat cake.", the French translation equates to "S'ils n'ont plus de pain, qu'ils mangent de la brioche!". History here can be subjective as some claim she may have and some claim she had not said these insensitive and indifferent words, however, her being a symbol of an aristocracy, this may have helped to fuel the fire of discontent and thus placing her upon the guillotine on the Place de la Révolution.
