The attacks on the Death Stars in this movie and in Guerre stellari (1977) were based on the World War II Royal Air Force mission "Operation Chastise", also known as the dam buster mission. In order to destroy dams in the Ruhr Valley, R.A.F. bombers dropped bombs that bounced over the surface of the rivers and then sank to the riverbed next to the bases of the dams before exploding. In this movie, "Bothans" acquired intelligence to complete the destruction of the Death Star. In "Chastise", a group of technicians developed the bouncing bombs that destroyed the dams. These technicians were known as "Boffins".
