Based on a true story: the lysine cartel was the first successful prosecution of an international cartel by the U.S. Department of Justice in more than 40 years. In 1992, the FBI stumbled upon Mark Whitacre (played by Matt Damon), a top executive at ADM food corporation, who was willing to act as an informant on a vast international price-fixing conspiracy. With the help of Whitacre, the FBI made hundreds of tapes of ADM executives making price-fixing deals with their rivals from Asia and Canada, all while drinking coffee and laughing about their crimes. The tapes should have cinched the case, but there was one problem: their star witness, Whitacre, was manipulative, deceitful, and mentally unstable. Nothing was as it seemed in this investigation into one of the most astounding white-collar crime cases in history of the food industry.
