The film was always intended to earn an R rating, and in fact it got the R designation from the MPA on its first review. But Quentin Tarantino had time to do a final review of that cut for himself, and decided that he wanted to reduce some elements of gore and torture in the movie because he thought things would play better for audiences without them. After he made these edits, the movie went through another MPA review and was told right after it was over and that it would still have an R rating, which was accepted.
