When he signed on to the show, Tom Selleck considered shaving his iconic mustache, concerned that a police commissioner who was a former cop would be prohibited from wearing one. Executive producer Leonard Goldberg said, "I think we oughta talk to CBS about that." The network vetoed the idea with the surmise that the public would not warm up to Selleck without his mustache. The reason given in the storyline for the presence of facial hair is that the office of PC is an appointment, not a promotion through the ranks. In any case, the real-life NYPD lifted its restriction against whiskers in 2020.
