The script originally had the woman on the train ask Ellie if Paul was her boyfriend, to which she would reply "no, he's my friend." Alice Wu wanted to cut it, secretly, and eventually did as she decided instead to focus on the train's other passengers, all of whom are looking out the window for something. Returning to Ellie's face we see that she's found something, the knowledge that she's going to be okay.
