While it's now praised as a classic, when first released in the United Sates the film was met with mixed to negative reviews from film critics, who criticized the violence, "over the top campiness", and poor characters. Roger Ebert noted that in his original review, he had giving the film a lower rating simply because it was 'Spaghetti Western' and therefore could not be considered art. While Ebert retroactively re-evaluated the film, other critics were not as charitable. New York Times critic, Renata Adler, said of the film, "it must be the most expensive, pious and repellent movie in the history of its peculiar genre", with a similarly negative review from Los Angeles Times critic Charles Champlin, who wrote that the "temptation is hereby proved irresistible to call The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, now playing citywide, The Bad, The Dull, and the Interminable, only because it is." Despite the reception, the film was soon reevaluated to be considered one of the most influential and greatest films of all time.
