A non-human example with Godzilla and Kong. Their feud ultimately serves to distract from the actual problem at hand, namely the creation and rise of Mechagodzilla (and the inadvertent resurrection of Ghidorah), but they still pursue it due to a combination of Godzilla's inability to tolerate any potential challengers to his dominance and Kong's refusal to submit to anyone.
