One of the boys at the orphanage is named "Andy." Andy was the nickname E.B. White (author of the novel) went by during his years at Cornell University, as it was tradition for male students with the surname "White" to be go by the first name "Andy" as a nod to Andrew Dickson White (co-founder and first president of Cornell). He continued to go by this nickname until his passing in 1985.
