Throughout the show, it is revealed that Nicky and Jack intend to join the family business, much to the chagrin of Erin and Linda: Nicky intends to become the Reagan family's first female cop, but Erin constantly strives for Nicky to follow her and be a lawyer; in a season 7 episode where Nicky aces a test to get into the NYPD police academy, it's revealed that Erin's fear for Nicky being a cop is less of her being a mother and more about them losing Joe in the line of duty. in a season six episode, Jack intends to follow Danny and join the Marines, but Linda berates Jack for considering it and Danny for supporting him as she believes that the world is too dangerously violent for Jack to go out and serve his country. Jack does throw aside his intentions to enlist, but does still intend to serve his country somehow. (Implying an intention to become a cop like Danny once was)
