Originally, in Tony Gilroy's script, Bourne saying, "I won't let that happen" was a tent-pole moment, where the passive character becomes active and begins to hunt instead of flee and defend. However, Damon wouldn't deliver the line the way it was written. He, as well as Liman, felt it was too derivative, too much like something an action hero would say in a typical action movie. The director and the actor had a fun time sorting out a different way for the character to deliver the line and not have it come off as derivative.
