Gerald [Judge Reinhold] was originally a much more significant character in the film, especially in the earlier drafts where he was the bank security guard named Gary instead and was the younger brother of the Sheriff, aiming for Brent's job as the deputy. He would also openly blame Billy for all the death and carnage that befell the town (much more extreme than what ended up in the final film) and this would come to a head as he would try to kill Billy, only to be mauled to death by the Gremlins. Much of Gerald's role as filmed, such as a scene of him trying to get Billy fired and trying to force Kate into a relationship with him was cut out, leaving him with only a couple of scenes.
