The scene in which Marie (Carrie Fisher) and Sally (Meg Ryan) run into Harry in a bookstore ("Someone is staring at you in personal growth") was filmed at a branch of the independent bookstore chain Shakespeare & Co, then located at 2259 Broadway (at 81st Street). Although this location closed in 1996 because of competition from a nearby Barnes & Noble branch, there are still (as of 2021) several locations of Shakespeare & Co. open in New York. Meg Ryan's 1998 movie You've Got Mail, also written by Nora Ephron, was about the rivalry between an independent New York bookstore and a large, Barnes & Noble-like chain.
