Cleopatra's reign marks the end of the Hellenistic period (323-30 BC), when kingdoms with either Greek culture or Greek-influenced culture dominated the Mediterranean world and the Near East. Ptolemaic Egypt was the last surviving major kingdom of this era. Following Cleopatra's death, the Roman Empire was the dominant power in the Mediterranean. The few surviving Hellenistic states became its vassal states.
