According to most people involved, Cheyenne had not been in Bernardo Bertolucci's and Dario Argento's original writings, and was only introduced by Sergio Donati, who had written the part with Eli Wallach in mind. Sergio Leone thought audiences would identify Wallach too much with his role from Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966).
