Alan Cumming revealed in an August 2021 interview that he was asked to screen test for the role of Gilderoy Lockhart, but ended up telling producers to "f--- off" when he discovered they lied about the salary. He said, "They wanted me and Rupert Everett to do a screen test, and they said they couldn't pay me more than a certain sum, they just didn't have any more money in the budget. And I had the same agent as Rupert, who of course, they were going to pay more. Blatantly lying, stupidly lying, as well. Like, if you're going to lie, be clever about it." So he told them what to do with the role, assuming Everett would end up getting it. But then they gave it to Kenneth Branagh, who Cumming said "came out of the shadows."
