Bob Denver nearly did not get cast as Gilligan due to the fact he had a successful run on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959) as Maynard Krebs. When he was suggested to Sherwood Schwartz, the creator of Gilligan's Island was against it, because he didn't want a "beatnik-type" on the island; he was looking for something more in a stumbling innocent type. Thankfully when they did meet, Bob was able to prove to him that he was the right man for Gilligan.
