The Union Pacific railroad in this picture is still in business as of 2021 and is the second largest in the U.S. behind BNSF. Founded in 1862, it operates 8,300 locomotives on 32,200 miles of track in the West and Midwest. The other two railroads in the Transcontinental Railroad project were the Western Pacific and the Central Pacific Railroads. Those became Southern Pacific in 1885, then it merged with the Union Pacific in 1995.
