The portrayal of school life in this series does not always ring true, even as it advances story lines and comedic effect. This is especially true when Dobie and Maynard enroll in college at the beginning of Season 3, in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: The Ruptured Duck (1961). For example, consider The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: Like Oh, Brother (1962). Here, Dr Imogene Burkhart (Jean Byron) is Dobie and Maynard's Sociology professor, while in several previous episodes, including The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: It Takes a Heap o' Livin' to Make a Cave a Home (1962) and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: Dig, Dig, Dig (1961), she is a professor of Anthropology. The same multi-specialty is seen in episodes featuring Mr Pomfritt (William Schallert), who - after transferring along with Dobie and Maynard from the local High School to S. Peter Pryor Junior College - is seen teaching English Literature (The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: This Town Ain't Big Enough for Me and Robert Browning (1961)), Journalism (The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: I Remember Muu Muu (1962)), History (The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: The Truth Session (1962)), Sociology (The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: The Marriage Counselor (1962)) and even Economics [The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: The Big Blunder and Egg Man (1962)] which Prof. Pomfritt openly admits to the class he is being forced by the Dean to teach despite his lack of expertise.
