Some of the classic levels from the 16-bit Sonic titles can also be found littered throughout the sequel. The mysterious Mushroom Planet that Robotnik has been trapped on since the first movie is a clear allusion to the Mushroom Hill Zone, while Knuckles later collides with a water truck sporting the name Splash Hill Zone on the side. But fans may be most pleased to see the cinematic debut of the Labyrinth Zone, one of the more impressive levels from the original game, now repurposed as the twisty, expansive home of the Master Emerald. As Sonic is barrelling through the maze, we actually can hear a sound effect or two from the games used which is a subtle nod.
