Because the majority of the movie was filmed inside of a live retail mall between the hours of closing and opening, the production company was completely liable for any and all costs associated with damages and, in particular, theft. A production of this size, casting well over 100 extras in addition to cast and crew, had financially accounted for the possibility of some such occurrences. While there were incidents of theft reported from some of the stores, the actual extent of verifiable theft of items was not and likely will never be known mainly due to the fact that inventory systems at the time were nowhere near as sophisticated as modern day inventory control systems.
