Marcus Aurelius was one of six emperors who were of Spanish origin; the first two were Trajan (who was the first non-Italian to be Roman emperor) and his adopted son Hadrian. Theodosius I, his son Arcadius and grandson Theodosius II were the other three, who reigned during the latter part of the Late Empire (all were part of the Theodosian dynasty). Theodosius II ruled the Byzantine Empire.
