The producers freely acknowledge the plot is only "loosely based" on Hugh Glass's real life experience. The movies conflates two separate incidents, the Arikara attack on the trappers, which happened on June 2, 1823, and Hugh's mauling by a bear, which happened in August of 1823. Both incidents happened in what is now South Dakota, in the plains, not the mountains. There were no forests, no snow, and no mountains. Hugh crawled 200 miles back to Ft. Kiowa after being mauled, which would not make for a particularly interesting film. There is a historical marker about Hugh Glass and the bear incident near where it happened, which is present-day Shadehill Reservoir, SD. Captain Henry was a real person who was NOT murdered by one of his own trappers. Hugh's fantastic luck ran out 10 years later. He and two trapper companions were killed by Arikara in present-day Montana, near where the Bighorn River flows into the Yellowstone.
