Will Geer was known to improvise at times, ad-libbing bits of dialogue or even inserting snippets of poetry into his lines. Sometimes he would sing, though producers had him limit his repertoire to songs in the public domain (such as old hymns or Civil War era songs) so as to avoid music licensing issues.
