In 2007, Paramount began development on a proposed film adaptation of Dune. Peter Berg joined as director in 2008 with Joshua Zetumer as screenwriter. Berg subsequently dropped out to make Battleship (2012). Pierre Morel then took over as director, with Chase Palmer writing a new script. Morel also dropped out of the film in November 2010 and in 2011, Paramount put the project in turnaround as the rights had lapsed.
