Before starting work on "The Love Guru" script, Mike Myers, in fake beard, paisley robes and speaking in a mysterious, mellifluous accent, took the Guru Pitka character on a tour of New York stand-up clubs. Audiences who turned up for what was advertised as "An Evening of Spiritual Enlightenment with his Holiness the Guru Pitka" were offered an unhinged and whimsical "dharma lecture" which, as well as containing nonsensical pronouncements, also offered some profound statements, mixing comedy with genuine self-help advice.
