Schenley High School, the school which Greg, Earl, and Rachel attend, is an actual public high school in Pittsburgh. However, Pittsburgh State University, the college that rejects Greg's application, is a fake name. At one point, Greg refers to Pittsburgh State as PITT, which is an abbreviation for the University of Pittsburgh.
