On Sunday, 5 April, 1987, Paolo Sorrentino fulfilled his dream of attending a soccer match by his home team of Naples against Empoli to see his hero, Diego Maradona, in action. Sorrentino had planned to spend the weekend with his parents, at their house in the mountains. But with Maradona, Napoli were on the way to their first-ever Serie A championship. Young Paolo was permitted, for the first time, to go to the match alone. Both his parents were killed that night, poisoned in their bed by carbon monoxide fumes from a faulty heater, one month shy of Sorrentino's 17th birthday. He describes the creation of the film as such: "I don't think I'll make another intimate film like this. It was so difficult. It took me 20 years, and I've been thinking about it all that time. But this film gave me a stylistic key that I intend to explore for the future."
