Hubert Selby Jr.'s novel took place in Brooklyn instead of Coney Island. Since Darren Aronofsky grew up in Coney Island, he wanted to include locations and events Harry and Marion breaking onto the roof of a building was not in the novel that were personal to him. Selby didn't mind the change thinking it still captured the same culture.
