Anthony Michael Hall was originally set to play Pvt. Joker. Hall spent eight months preparing for the role but could not reach an agreement with Stanley Kubrick regarding the salary and the schedule. He was replaced by Matthew Modine. Hall has since responded to claims that he was fired for objecting to Kubrick's perfectionist style of directing as "not true".
